Purpose
NCRA is a not-for-profit association representing cancer registry professionals and Certified Tumor
Registrars (CTR). NCRA's primary focus is education and certification
with the goal to ensure all cancer
registry professionals have the required knowledge to be superior in their field. Worldwide, there are
5,000+ NCRA members and CTRs.
Cancer Registrars capture a complete summary of the history, diagnosis, treatment & disease status for
every cancer patient. Registrars' work leads to better information that is used in the management of cancer,
and ultimately, cures.

History
In 1956, the Commision on Cancer of the American College of Surgeons provided further impetus to the
development of hospital-based registries by incorporating the maintenance of a hospital-wide cancer registry
into their requirements for an approved cancer program. The number of these approved programs is now over
1,400.
Since the "War on Cancer" was declared and the National Cancer Act of 1971 was passed, the National
Cancer Institute has budgeted billions of dollars for research, detection and treatment of cancer. The goal
is to reduce cancer mortality by 50% by the year 2000. To have a role in this effort can be exciting and
fulfilling.
In October 1992, Congress established a National Program of Cancer Registries (Public Law 102-515, The
Cancer Registries Amendment Act). This legislation authorizes the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention
(CDC) to provide funds to states and territories to enhance existing cancer registries and to plan and
implement registries where they do not exist. With fiscal year 1995 funds, 42 states and the District of
Columbia are currently receiving CDC support for cancer registries.
