Virtual Clinical Practicum Catalog

Students seeking to earn the Certified Tumor Registrar (CTR) credential via Route A must complete a 160-hour clinical practicum before taking the exam. Some hours of the practicum can be completed working virtually with an Independent Clinical Advisor (ICA). The majority of clinical hours, however, must be completed at a cancer registry under the supervision of a cancer registrar with the CTR credential. The Clinical Practicum Guide defines the requirements of the 160-hour clinical practicum.

The hours in the clinical practicum are organized based on the seven domains of practice tested in the Certified Tumor Registrar (CTR) exam. The NCRA Formal Education Program Review Committee has approved the following online clinical practicum activities. As noted above, these activities must be completed under the supervision of an ICA. Abstracting
Eighty-four hours of the 160-hour practicum are concentrated on abstracting and data collection skills. As part of the 84 hours, students must complete 30 abstracts. Students can complete 15 of those 30 required abstracts through SEER*Educate under the supervision of their ICA. (This equates to 30 hours of the 160-hour practicum.)

The SEER*Educate abstracts are located in the Practical Applications section. Students will be required to establish an online account at SEER*Educate and affiliate with their ICA. Students will receive assignments from the ICA and will be required to submit completed assignments for review and discussion.

Casefinding
The SEER*Educate Casefinding Tests consist of modules focused on the core functions of the cancer registry. Successful completion of the Casefinding Tests will satisfy the nine-hour requirement as outlined in the clinical practicum. Completion of the module will be reviewed by the ICA.

HIPAA
NCRA’s Center for Cancer Registry Education (CCRE) offers an online course entitled Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) for Cancer Registrars.
Free to students in the ICA Program, successful completion (grade of 85 or above) of this course will satisfy the three-hour requirement for HIPAA as outline in the clinical practicum. Documentation of completion of the HIPAA course will be submitted to the ICA for review and discussion. A student’s ICA will send the link to access the HIPAA course on the Center for Cancer Registry Education.
