According to the National Institutes of Health, cancer is the second leading cause of death among Americans. The CDC’s Cancer Surveillance Branch is home to the National Program of Cancer Registries (NPCR). NPCR was established by the Cancer Registries Amendment Act in 1992. As a result, cancer is the only reportable chronic disease, allowing CDC to disseminate accurate national incidence data. By understanding the burden of cancer, public health organizations, including CDC, can create programs and interventions for prevention and early detection. The CDC funds 45 states, the District of Columbia, and two U.S. territories.
